Welcome to the North Texas Church of Freethought!

We are a rational approach to religion, offering atheists, agnostics, humanists, and freethinkers all the social, emotional and inspirational benefits of traditional faith-based churches, but without appealing to tradition or superstition. Our growing community of freethinkers provides a positive, affirming environment for leading a good life, free of the illogic and intolerance of other religions based on holy books and supernaturalism.

Our regular service takes place on the first Sunday of every month at the Wyndham DFW Airport North. Plan to arrive at 10:00 AM for coffee and fellowship, followed by our service from 10:30 AM until 12:00 PM. We encourage parents to bring their children to participate in our freethinking "Sunday School," where they will learn about the wonderful world around us with other children from freethinking families. We encourage you also to join us at Jason's Deli at the corner of I-635 and MacArthur Boulevard, where most of us converge directly after the service to eat and chat for up to several hours. If you've missed our service for the month, catch up by downloading our latest bulletin, subscribe to our email newsletter, subscribe to our podcast or listen to it on iTunes. You can also now find us on Meetup.com!

If you have questions about the NTCOF, they've probably been answered at our FAQ. If not, please drop us a line by email or voicemail. We hope to see you soon!

UCoR Essay Contest Print
The United Coalition of Reason is delighted to announce an essay contest as part of our upcoming Good Without God campaign tied not only to a social movement but to a book that’s being published in the fall. Please forward this message as widely as possible and help us unite the millions of voices of reason across the country.

The contest is simple. Please tell us your personal story, in 500 words or less: what does it mean for you to be Good Without God? How do you live out your positive values as a Humanist, atheist, agnostic, secularist, or freethinker? Please write in the first person.

We highly encourage you to share specific examples about your god-free involvement in service to country or community; how your non-religious approach to life helped you to get through a difficult time; or how it transformed your relationships with your family and the people you care about.

The author of the first-prize essay will receive a prize of $1,000, courtesy of the United Coalition of Reason.

National Day of Reason Print
Wednesday, 22 April 2009 10:12

The National Day of Reason exists as a counterpoint to the National Day of Prayer, which was suggested in the 1950's by Billy Graham, and then fixed to the first Thursday in May by Ronald Reagan in 1988.

As freethinkers, we know that there is no evidence that prayer to any deity has any external effect, beyond the calming and focusing effect it may have on one's own psychology, much as meditation provides. But as a strategy to effect real outcomes in the world around us generally, and America specifically, prayer always fails.

It's also worth noting that a government endorsement of prayer is a transgression of the separation of church and state that is a part of our Constitution. As Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association notes: "Secular Americans understandably get exasperated each May when the federal government exhibits a complete disregard for the separation of church and state with its many National Day of Prayer observances. The National Day of Reason is the nontheist's response to this annual abuse of the U.S. Constitution. It's for all those who value reason over dogma and expect their government to do the same."

Burn Patterns - Texas Injustice Print

Curtis Severns is a member of the North Texas Church of Freethought who was convicted in 2006 of an arson that none who know him believe that he committed. New evidence shows that the testimony used to convict him is contradicted by forensic science. Dr. Gerald Hurst, a forensic investigator, is working to bring this injustice to light and to return Curtis to his friends and family. The ongoing story is being told in the Texas Observer, written by journalist Dave Mann:

DFW Coalition of Reason Billboard Print
Written by Zachary Moore
Monday, 02 March 2009 13:28

The Metroplex Atheists have taken the initiative, in a partnership with the Dallas-Plano Atheists Meetup group, to sponsor a local billboard this month, with the purpose of making secular residents of Dallas and Fort Worth aware that they are not alone:

Executive Director Zachary Moore posing in front of the Dallas billboard at the intersection of I-35 (Stemmons) and Loop 12 (Northwest Highway).

From the press release on the DFW Coalition of Reason website:

"The primary goal of billboards like these is to let nontheistic people--such as atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and humanists--know they aren't alone," explained Fred Edwords, communications director for the United Coalition of Reason. "The message is particularly necessary in a part of the country that, for many, has become identified with Protestant evangelicalism. Area nontheists may be unaware that there's a thriving community for them."
Although not a target of the billboard campaign, local organizers say that religious believers can learn something too. “We want people to know that atheists and agnostics are as essential a part of our community as the faithful are.” said Terry McDonald, coordinator of the DFW Coalition of Reason. We have the same compassionate values and, in most other ways, are just like them. We are hard-working, tax-paying moral citizens who care deeply about family, community, state and nation.”

The establishment of a DFW Coalition of Reason is a significant step forward for secular and non-theistic people here in North Texas, and the NTCOF is pleased to be included in this dynamic group- stay on the lookout for many more exciting developments as we begin to work together!

Got Debate? Print
Monday, 18 May 2009 21:35

The NTCOF is committed to freethought as a way of learning about the world around us, and also as a way of answering life's toughest questions. But that's not just something we say- we put it into practice too! The NTCOF's new Debate Club has been organized to encourage our members to put some extra thought into these issues, and at the same time promote critical thinking skills and rhetorical technique.

Our inaugural debate was on the resolution "euthanasia should be legalized and regulated," and you can listen to both the debate, and the gathered audience's critique by clicking here. Check out continued discussion and future topics at our forum here.

Dr. Zach on Chariots of Iron Print
Wednesday, 29 April 2009 06:05

The Chariots of Iron podcast was founded in 2008 to provide a forum which features "news and topical discussions on atheism, humanism, skepticism, science, religious history, scriptural criticism and (of course) wacky religious antics." The hosts consider themselves to be "Atheiskeptihumanists™", and derive the name of their podcast from the first chapter of Judges, which says that:

"And Yahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands; he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had chariots of iron."

Executive Director Zachary Moore was a guest on their most recent podcast, and talked extensively about the North Texas Church of Freethought, its founding, and what has made it so successful. The hosts were also very interested in promoting the foundation of new Churches of Freethought throughout the country and even the world. Without a doubt, this is something that the NTCOF supports, and just as we have made it a simple process for a sister church in Houston to organize, we can provide the same assistance to any other individuals who are serious about organizing a Church of Freethought in their area. Highway Cleanup

This month marks the one-year anniversary of the North Texas Church of Freethought Adopt-a-Highway outreach. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Outreach Director Susette Geissler and her husband Keith, we have been able to demonstrate our commitment to improving the community around us, showing other North Texans that freethinkers are conscientous citizens who care about the well-being of our society. Our adopted road is Northwest Highway between US-75 and Preston Road. We meet once every three months or so at the Dillard's parking lot at the Northpark mall, distribute trash bags and reflective vests, and take an easy stroll down the road, picking up whatever trash we find along the way. It's an excellent opportunity to get some exercise and spend time with your fellow freethinkers- be sure to watch our calendar and listen for announcements from Keith during an upcoming service!
